Photonic pulse sources with nanostructured gain media - Dublin

Photonics is a rapidly evolving, versatile, enormously capable means of generating and transmitting information and energy. Like electronics, it ranges in scale from the very largest displays and solar panels to the smallest nanoscale device and integrated circuits. The workhorse of photonics is the semiconductor junction diode source, most often in the form of a laser diode or LED but also possibly as an amplifier, signal limiter or logic element. In this project we explore the unique attributes and advantages of novel nanoscale quantum dot structures in laser diode and amplifier gain media: their fast recovery dynamics and suppressed damping and lateral diffusion confers much greater stability on pulsed devices in particular. The result is shorter pulses with lower interpulse noise, jitter and excess spectral broadening. The PhD student(s) and/or postdoc will conduct modeā€locking experiments in quantum dot and dash lasers subject to external optical feedback, injection and coupling t ... Training that brought out the best in the individual – and helped them transport their natural best into the more pressured situation of a TV studio. Training that de-mystified television and radio. That stopped programme guests obsessing about the hidden agendas they were sure interviewers had. That allowed them to be comfortable, confident and communicative.Within a few years, the company was a household name: if media training was mentioned, Carr Communication ...
