Dental Zirconia Framework Design Optimisation - Ireland

Zirconia is a current promising ceramic material with excellent aesthetics for dental applications, but its performance when used as a framework (sub‐structure) for porcelain veneered dental bridges is still surpassed by metal‐ceramic combinations. The clinical success of zirconia frameworks depends on a number of parameters, but the framework design is critical. Modern Computer Aided Design (CAD) methods, as well as cutting edge Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM), are now finding their way into Dental Technology. However, the full potential of these technologies is not being exploited. Anatomic (non‐uniform) designs of zirconia framework have been shown to support veneering porcelain better than constant thickness cores. Nonanatomic frameworks are however still largely used clinically and no optimum design strategy has been yet proposed.
