Sense the city - Dublin

The aim of this project is to create a framework to employ mobile phones to sense the city through the use of a smart-phone application. The mobile phone will record dB (noise levels) with its microphone and it will send the measurements back to the server, including the GPS position. The data acquired by the mobile sensors will integrate permanent sensors (noise monitoring stations run by the Local Authority) measurements and populate an online noise map. The proposed application will take the form of a social media application (such as Foursquare): the user will be able to “check in” to places (indoor and outdoor). As part of the check-in process, the user will be asked to asnwer a limited number of specific questions about his/her mood in that moment and about the his/her opinion about the place. The result will be a multi-perspective survey of the city, which will also help to assess how noise affects the perception of the different urban areas. As such, the project will have the f ...
