The 1916 Easter Rising occurred against a backdrop of revolution in Irish literary and artistic circles that sought to define a new national identity and self image. We will look at writings by Patrick Pearse, William Butler Yeats, Lady Augusta Gregory, and Douglas Hyde. We will explore the works of artists like Patrick Campbell, William Orpen, Kathleen Fox, Wilhelmina Geddes and Jack Yeats and photographer Joseph Cashman.
