The evolutionary ecology of cognition in animal populations - Ireland

Individual animals differ substantially and consistently from one another in their cognitive abilities. Why this arises from an evolutionary perspective, and, what it means for how well individuals adapt to living in challenging environments, remain poorly understood. The aim of this PhD will be to understand the evolutionary, ecological and behavioural consequences of individual variation in cognitive ability using the great tit as a model system. Recently “personality” generally and problem solving ability specifically have been studied in the great tit. Both types of variation influence ecologically important behaviour, including competitive ability, dispersal and habitat use. For example, problem solvers and individuals with fast personality types tend to have low competitive ability. But how these associations arise, and what they mean for population and meta‐population level processes, remain unclear. The overall approach will be to use wild great tits to: i) examine the extent t ... The evolutionary ecology of animal personalities - Ireland

Individual animals differ substantially and consistently from one another in their “personality”. Why this arises from an evolutionary perspective, and, what it means for how well animals adapt to living in challenging environments, remain poorly understood. The aim of this PhD will be to understand the evolutionary‐ecological, biodiversity and behavioural consequences of individual variationin personality using the great tit Parus major as a model system. The overall approach will be to use wild great tits to: i) examine the extent to which a range of personality and other behavioural traits are inter‐correlated, ii) experimentally test behavioural and social mechanisms underlying these associations, iii) test whether and how natural selection acts on these traits and iv) explore what this variation meansfor how animals are distributed within and among small sub‐populations of varying habitat quality across a modern woodland and agricultural landscape. These fundamental questions will h ...
